This is the place to introduce yourself to others so I'll start the ball rolling. My name is Jeannine and I'm a fan of Space 1999, and in particular of Martin Landau. I remember watching episodes of Space 1999 way back in the 1980s, yes it must have been the mid 80s because I videotaped some of the episodes and I didn't have a video until about 1985! I loved the show because quite simply, it was new and exciting. Now of course I can look at it with a more refined eye and see that, yes, it had its faults, but hey, this series was made in the 70s when special effects were not done by computer as they are now. What they did with the technology available at the time was excellent, and those special effects guys are to be commended.

I didn't really see much of the series between the 80s and now, though I guess it must have been repeated at various times on British TV. However, my interest was sparked anew when I started exploring the Internet for Space 1999 related sites, and boy, are there a lot of excellent sites out there. The Internet is truly a wonderful thing, keeping old TV shows alive and allowing like-minded fans of the shows to connect and share their passion. I have met so many wonderful people through the power of the Internet, not just Space 1999 fans but fans of other shows also.

Once my interest was re-ignited I bought the Network DVD Space 1999 Season One box set and wow are these digitally remastered DVDs something else. Before this I had only had my old grainy VHS tapes but now here were my heroes in all their glory. I must admit I spent a lot of the school summer break (I work in a school) watching the episodes. Then I was lucky enough to find a Season Two box set, although I must admit that for me Season One is better than Season Two (but that's only my opinion! Others might disagree - Discuss!).

From there I decided I'd like to try and set up a website dedicated to Space 1999. It's still an ongoing work but you can find it here http://jhochet.tripod.com/space1999revisited/index.html. I do hope you will pay it a visit, leave a message in my guest book, and then take part in the discussion here. Welcome aboard..

Ah, a new forum. Kudos! I am a transplanted European now living in North America. English is my second language so I ask for patience if I misuse a word or bend the language too far. Space 1999 was a fundamental influence in my life as a child, and in no small measure I learned English in order to listen to the actors say the lines as they were intended, and not as mangled as the would sometimes become. I wish you the best for this forum and I hope it grows.

Jeannine, I'm glad you got the forum up and running! Looks great!

To introduce myself a bit, I live in the U.S. and I'm a big fan of S99 and have been since I first watched it with my cousin during the show's premier years in the mid '70's. Over the years, I often thought about this show and when I saw that it was on DVD a couple of years ago, I got it as a Christmas present and that was it! I was hooked all over, again. This time, I saw the show through adult eyes and I now appreciate the first series more than ever before.

Like Jeannine, I'm also a great admirer of Martin Landau. Ironically, S99 isn't what introduced me to Marty, but rather a film I had seen him in years before called, "Cleopatra". This movie had such an impact on me that it sparked my life-long study of Egyptology, (most specifically, the Amarna Revolution--that whole Akhenaton mess, for any fellow historians.) After much musing on this over the decades and one important catalyst in particular, my mission now is to see "Cleopatra" finally restored. Two hours of this film were deleted, including many of Martin's best scenes as General Rufio. For information on this project, please go to the link for the "Cleopatra Campaign" at:

oops, I see that links can't be posted. Go to mapimi "dot" wetpaint "dot" com, and look for the "Cleopatra Campaign" page. farao

Jeannine, you are doing a wonderful job with your new website for Space: 1999. I love the screen shots and the rest of the work you are doing there. How it is expanding with every new page! I have seen other nice sites for S99 out there, but I love the way you are focusing on interaction. I love the forum idea.

CalgaryAlphan, I believe I may have come across information about your book project from someone who knows someone, who knows you, small world that it is! Are you the one who is going to be using some wonderful previously-unpublished photos in your book? If this is the project I've heard about through the S99 grapevine, I am most excited to see it! And if it is a new book I've not heard about yet, I'm equally looking forward to seeing it, as there is so little information out there currently on this series.

I am looking forward to watching this forum and getting involved in future discussions. Thank you for doing this, Jeannine!

Hi Miranda,

I'm not sure if you've heard about my book or not. Although I have been hoping to include some photos in my book, the decision about a photo section is in the hands of the publishers, and will likely come down to a financial decision on their part (cost vs. potential return on investment). The website for my book is www.destinationmoonbasealpha.net - take a look around. I hope to have a release date soon, and I'm getting very excited to hear people's reaction to the book once it's released!

Robert,
I'm really looking forward to the publication of your book (like the avatar btw). I've had a look at your website and it's certainly wet my appetite all the more. I'm bidding on a Space 1999 book on ebay at the moment so keep your fingers crossed!

Introductions first I guess....my name is Jorge, I'm from Lisbon/Portugal and currently posted in Ottawa/Canada.
I found this website on Prentis Hancock’s FB profile and was immediately hooked.
I've been a fan of Space:1999 since its initial broadcast here in Portugal back in October 1976. For those 30 years, I always longed for decent models from the show and it’s strange that it's only in the last few years that they have became available. I guess that is testament to the ongoing interest in the show! I currently own an extensive 60+ models including Eagles, Moonbases, launchpads, guest models and also a couple of props....among other Anderson related models.
Ok enough about me. Will continue to read and lurk and maybe post should the desire strike me. Thanks again Jeannine for this WONDERFUL website. The Internet has made it so much easier for fans to unite!
Best wishes, Jorge

Couldn't agree more Jorge. I can't imagine life before the Internet can you! So much information, so many possibilities, all at the touch of a keyboard. Must go down as the best invention ever. Oh how I wish the the Internet had been available when I was in school. How I envy the kids I work with at school now, but then again a lot of the time they don't actually realise how lucky they are because they have always had the Internet and don't know of a time before...

Hello from Admin Empty Hi everyone

Post by Andrew Kearley Sun Nov 01, 2009 9:54 am

My name's Andrew, and I've been looking for somewhere to discuss the series in depth with other fans - and I haven't found it so far. I'm hoping this forum could be it.

I'll put my cards on the table. I love Space: 1999's first series - I think it's the most spectacular, breath-taking and awe-inspiring tv series I've ever seen. On an intellectual and a spiritual level, it's affected me more than anything else. The second series is something I merely tolerate. It's a very bad, hoky 1970s sci-fi series. There are a few good ideas in some of the episodes, but generally the whole thing is let down by its poor execution - it has such a degree of crassness and lack of gravitas. It's very hard to even think of the two series as being the same show.

One of the things that's frustrated me over the years is the lack of regard the series has amongst the general sci-fi fandom - I seem to spend most of my time on other forums defending the series against negative comments. Part of the problem, it seems to me, is that those who don't "get" the show want it to be just like Star Trek or any other generic sci-fi series, and so condemn it for not playing by the rules of the genre - instead of celebrating the fact that it's so fundamentally different in style and execution to any other sci-fi series - it really is something unique and worthy of praise just for that.

Anyway, after analysing and defending the show for so long, I decided to finally get some of my thoughts down in a permanent form, so I've started writing an episode-by-episode critique of the series. It's very much a work in progress, and I know it's going to take me a long time to complete - so far I've done some introductory stuff and an analysis of Breakaway - but you can read it on my website:

Hello from Admin Empty Welcome everyone!

Post by Commander Koenig Sun Nov 01, 2009 10:23 am

I'm really happy to welcome everyone onto this forum, and I do hope that it will develop into the place where like-minded fans can discuss the series. It's great that you've all taken the time to join the forum and I hope that you will feel able to contribute your ideas so that this forum can grow. I'm very much a novice at this forum business, though I've taken part in a few over the years and always wanted to get one of my own started, but never knowing quite how!

Andrew, your post was really interesting to read, and I certainly hope to have some really good discussions with you about the relative merits (or otherwise Wink of Season 2. Like you, I cringe at some of the episodes from season 2 and when compared to the great work in season one it does indeed seem like a completely different series. There are a few episodes from season two which have some redeeming features but on the whole they come a very poor second to the season one episodes. I'm currently doing the synopsis of season 2 episodes for my website and I must admit I'm struggling a little! Look forward to your views on seasons one and two.

I did have a look at your website and love your critique of Breakaway. I look forward to seeing your site grow.

Anyway, just wanted to say hi to all of you and thank you for becoming part of this forum.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Looking ahead to doing series 2 for my site, I really can't see that it's going to be quite as in-depth as some of the series 1 episodes - there simply isn't the content there to begin with...

Hello from Admin Empty Re: Synopsis Year Two

Post by Commander Koenig Sun Nov 01, 2009 10:49 am

I cheated a little with the synopsis for season one because I took the info from the nifty little booklet provided with the DVDs, but with Year 2 I'm on my own! I'm not exactly a natural writer and tend to waffle a bit but I'll keep perservering. Looks like we might have to gee each other on a bit... Laughing

Hello peoples,

I've been a fan of the series (1st season is my preferred season) since it first aired back in '75 (I was about 8 yo). I'm also a fan of Doctor Who, Dark Shadows (original and 1991 series), Forever Knight, Buffy, Angel and Star Gate SG1. I also enjoy the new Doctor Who series, Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood. I'm recently getting hooked on the Mission:Impossible tv series.

I'm from Maine, U.S.A. I live here with Kurt, my partner of 9 years and our cat, Chloe (she's 2 3/4 yo).

It's nice to have another forum to talk about Space:1999.

Best.

Howdy everyone,

My name is Victor, I have been a Space: 1999 fan since Breakaway. I attended the first two Space: 1999 conventions in 1978 and 79. My favorite season is Year One with the best episodes being: Black Sun, Infernal Machine, Dragon's Domain and The Testament of Arkadia. Year Two was good but there are things I would have done differently. Looking forward to sdome good discussions here.

I am Patrick,a.k.a. eagleman, from the U.S. state of North Carolina. I have been a "Space:1999" fan since its U.S. debut in 1975, when I was 11. I come from a family of "Star Trek" fans. While I like "Star Trek", "Space:1999" will always be a sentimental favorite with me. The first season theme rocks with me and the special effects remain spectacular even by today's standards. I've always liked Martin Landau and Barbara Bain. Thanks for starting this great forum. I look forward to many posts.
