troubled sci-fi series
hi to all
i have read in magazines and also the encloypedia of science fiction that Space 1999 was a troubled sci-fi series from the start. and it started with a bang and ended in a whimper. does anyone else think that it was a troubled sci-fi series because i certainly don't think for one second that it is a troubled sci-fi series.

Re: troubled sci-fi series
I suppose it rather depends on how one defines 'troubled'. Financial? Inter-actor strife? Producer vs cast conflict? In my opinion, series one of Space:1999 ended on as intelligent and thought-provoking a note as it began. I do not perceive it as all 'troubled' As far as series two, it started fairly well, devolved into absolute stupidity, but was starting to build again at the end. So yes, I would rather agree it ended on a 'whimper' as compared to series one. And I would absolutely characterise Freddie Freiberger as a major source of 'trouble'.

Re: troubled sci-fi series
There's a lot of "received wisdom" regarding Space: 1999 that you see
regurgitated in genre magazines and books. Generally speaking, I
don't agree with a lot of it. (Though obviously, I will concede
that series 2 is often trite, simplistic and formulaic generic sci-fi
when compared to the exstentialist wonder of series 1.) Most of
the criticisms of series 1 are repeating thirty year old comments that
stem from a particular point of view (probably the point of view that
the show isn't Star Trek!
). I accept the the show is an acquired taste and not to
everyone's liking, but that doesn't make it "troubled" - that just
makes it different.

"Troubled" is nothing to be ashamed of, though the people throwing this word around may think so. Do valuable, imaginative, creative television and your production will experience all kinds of trouble, usually enough to kill it. A trouble-free project probably would turn out not to be worth a damn.
