Space 1999 Movie Empty Space 1999 Movie

Post by Commander Koenig Mon Nov 09, 2009 7:58 am

Do you think a Space 1999 movie would work? If so, what would you call it, what year would it be set in, who might you cast in lead roles, and what might the storyline be?? Question

If BSG can be successfully reimaged, most certainly can Space:1999, so the question becomes, should it be reimaged?. I, for one, have no desire to see what the modern writer would do to our beloved characters. A Prof Bergman with a 'hidden, dark secret' of being a pedophile? A Capt Carter with a substance abuse problem? A Dr. Russell who once performed unethical experiments? A Cmdr Koenig who is secretly tortured by an undiagnosed mental illness? You might laugh at these statements, but consider what they did to BSG. I fear the recent respectful remake of Star Trek is the exception, not the rule.

You make some good points. Unfortunately it seems to be the fashion for the Hollywood bright sparks to remake all successful TV shows, and most of them are unsuccessful as movies with a few exceptions. I haven't seen the newest Star Trek movie but I will probably buy the DVD at some point as I love Star Trek anyway. Some of the previous Star Trek movies were pretty good, I didn't enjoy the very first one, but thoroughly enjoyed The Wrath of Khan, and The Search for Spock. I'm afraid the subsequent offerings then started to get a bit silly and then as the Next Generation crew took over things picked up a bit.

I did hear a rumour that there was talk of remaking Space 1999 but just how true this is I don't know. Sorry to be dense but what is BSG Question

As Nick Tate so rightly put it in a recent interview, the ideal opportunity and release date for such a project would have been the year 1999, and sadly, that opportunity has been and gone. Sad

Post by Andrew Kearley Mon Nov 09, 2009 2:10 pm

I'm always wary of Hollywood's "re-imaginings" of old tv shows. See Mission: Impossible for an example of another Martin Landau starring series murdered by Hollywood! Oft-times, they just take the name of something, and maybe one or two of its best remembered tropes, and then make whatever they want to make anyway. With Space: 1999, they couldn't even take the title - it's unlikely that the studios would expect their audience to accept a futuristic sci-fi film set in the past! So if they're going to call it something else anyway, they might as well make something else right from the start.

it should remain 1999. After all, Trekkies still do all their stuff around the idea that Khan led a war in the 1990's, and left Earth on the Botany Bay in 1996.
If they can, we can!

I take the point about a Space 1999 movie not being able to take that title because we've passed the date but I think a flash back style premise might work.

In my film the 'old' Moonbase Alpha crew will be settled on a new planet then Commander Koenig begins a narrative ( a la 'Dragon's Domain' and 'Testament of Arkadia') telling the story of the moon breaking out of Earth's orbit in 1999, recounting some adventures along the way, and then finally finding a habitable planet. Operation Exodus is put into place and they all settle on the new Planet.... which brings us back to the present time.

Space 1999 Movie Empty MOONBASE ALPHA

Post by Steve Gerard Fri Nov 13, 2009 7:48 am

MOONBASE ALPHA as the movie reboot title...as BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, SEAQUEST DSV 2032 and SPACE ACADEMY worked.

Keep all the original production designs: Sets, Uniforms, Props, Eagles and of course ALPHA MOONBASE interiors & exteriors! What a Face

Huh, that just might work. Of course, no one would actually do that. Where is the blood and guts? Where is the drama in having sane characters face challenges without the Coronation Street theatrics?

Interesting article - thanks for sharing. Nice to see Space: 1999 mentioned first and foremost.

I am all for a reboot of 1999, as - even if they get it totally wrong - it takes nothing away from the original, which we will always be able to enjoy. And if they were to get it right (as I think the new Star Trek reboot did) it could be a blast!

(Pun intended)

It's a crying shame that a reboot wasn't done in 1999 - that would have been the obvious year to do such a venture.

My reservations about a reboot Space:1999 movie is led by the example of what happened with the recent Jonathan Frake's directed Thunderbirds. That unmitigated disaster set back most likely indefinitely the possibility of re-airings of that wonderful series ever making it into mainstream USA. A reboot movie must be done well, or else the memory of our show will be not merely dim and almost forgotten, but besmirched and tarnished.

Mmm - maybe the success of a reboot movie is a question of which director does the reboot ? Might be one factor anyway.

I still think that a big factor in the success of the recent Star Trek movie was the inclusion of Leonard Nimoy.

If a Space 1999 reboot movie was ever attempted, cameo appearances by some of the original cast members would no doubt be of help. I know Barbara Bain already said she would consider it if it ever happened (as stated when she was asked that question on a recent NDB media interview).

I agree. It was tastefully and artfully done and not only added to the storyline, but almost provided a benediction to continue on this new line.

And how do you see this being done, if I might ask? What roles would they play? Their original characters along the lines of Leonard Nimoy, somehow, or simply as cameos?

I think that if a Space 1999 reboot movie was ever attempted, the movie could revolve around the 'next generation' of Alphans so to speak (ie the grown up children of the original Alphans) and that way, ex original characters could be featured in brief flashbacks to set the scene (eg flashback to John Koenig on his deathbed passing on some pearls of wisdom etc).

The novel Earthfall by E.C.Tubb for example touched on the subject of Alphans and their children.

At any rate, if a reboot movie is ever done with some appearances by ex original cast members, it would obviously have to be soon if they wanted to include Martin Landau as he is now in his 80s.

If Star Trek:The Next Generation worked for the Star Trek franchise back in the 1980s - maybe a 'Next Generation' storyline could work for Space 1999 also ?

It can also depend on the writer/s. I think even the greats, like Michael Curtiz, or Hitchcock, could do only so much with a crap script.

A good Sp99 film could only be done by a rebellious sort of producer who wants to maintain the show's integrity against all the Hollywood weasels who put out all the awful Hollywood product we see today. He/she would have to know how to use diplomacy and placate the executives, satisfying them that the film will push the right buttons with the public, while going ahead and doing what he wants. If you trust it to mainstream Hollywood, you'll get garbage.
