Y2 Uniforms Empty Y2 Uniforms

Is it just me, or do the Y2 uniforms just somehow lack the "feel" of Alpha, built up in Y1?
Y'all?

Yes, I agree. It seems it's all part of a production decision to "busy up" the visual look, introduce a lot of more colour - jackets, badges and so on - which perhaps would have worked fine on some other series about a Moonbase - they wouldn't have been out of place in "Moonbase 3" or "Star Cops" for instance. One of the things I like about the first series is the stark, sterile look of Alpha - not just the uniforms, but the base itself. It creates a nice contrast with the colourful planetary environments they visit. Helena says at one point: "Alpha isn't home, it's a barracks." And the look of the original uniforms really fits into that.

I love the Year 2 uniforms.
C'mon, contrast the womens beige trousers in Year 1 with the womens slit skirts and knee boots in Year 2.

Y2 Uniforms Empty Re: Year 2 uniforms

I liked the uniforms from both years really, both had their merits. I always thought the different coloured sleeves was a neat idea, as Martin Landau said in an interview ( I think it was on the documentary on You Tube?) it was an easy way to tell who did what job. I also read, I think on the Catacombs site but maybe wrong, that Martin Landau hated the new jacket he had to wear in year 2 episode The Metamorphs so much that he only wore it for that episode, then signed it and gave it to a fan! It was a bit weird looking.

Appropriated from the Fanderson Space:1999 documentary. The sleeves were a very effective idea, and one that set the show distinctly apart in its 'look'.

They didn't get rid of the sleeve colors that represented different functions on the base in s2. They just added a colored turtleneck to it. That was alright, but adding that colored collared jacket was unnecessary.

Even the jacket did not bother me, although logically you must ask when the supplies came from as we did not see them in series 1. The new presence of the ID tags bewilders me. After a year in space, you would expect they would well know one another in such a small community.

Of course, as our new member CR might suggest, the differences in series 2 can be easily explained if these are two different communities occurring in parallel universes. (Yes, CR, I have paid attention to this very reasonable theory from the Eagle Forum.)

Though no one talked about "reboots" yet, that's what s2 was, basically. Same situation, but with everything changed that they felt like changing with no explanation.

Y2 Uniforms Empty Re: Y2 Uniforms

I love the Y1 uniforms, but I think the Y2 uniforms were a bit better with the following exception:

The jacket color and the sleeve / collar color didn't really seem to add up to anything with coherent meaning as it did in Y1. For example, Alan would wear a read jacket one day and a blueish or grayish jacket the next. Koenig had a dark blue jacket and an orange jacket. Sometimes a Doctor Russell would have a dark blue jacket and another doctor would wear a red one. It seemed that you could wear whatever color jacket you felt like depending on your mood.

Of course this is like comparing apples and oranges (the same goes for comparing both series) as Y1 is obviously going for an almost minimalist sterile atmosphere with it's uniforms and sets and lack of color, Y2 is doing a 180, with multiple colored jackets full of colored patches, bright colorful signage on the walls and over the doorways.

And while I prefer Y1 in style and storytelling, I am drawn to the Y2 uni's, even though the Y1 outfits make more sense in conveying the hierarchy of Alpha and the vocation of the Alphans who wear them.

Excellent. This sums up my feelings exactly.
